About this Event
1 College Circle, Geneseo, New York 14454
The Communication Department’s IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility) Committee invites the Geneseo community to a viewing of On The Record, a documentary that features Black women and their harrowing stories of workplace harassment and sexual assault within the hip-hop music industry, specifically in regards to their allegations against hip-hop mogul Russell Simons. The film weaves "together the first hand testimonies of survivors, with the analytical insights of prominent Black academics, journalists and thought leaders... to reveal the unique burden Black women face when contending with these crimes, and the ways in which their struggle has – to date – been largely overlooked by the mainstream #MeToo movement… The film provides insight into the ways assault crimes uniquely impact Black women for life, and the many historic and contemporary cultural forces that encourage them to remain silent at the cost of their own well being.”
The event is open to the public and may be of interest to students, faculty, and staff from a variety of perspectives, including Black Studies, Gender Studies, Music, Communication, Psychology, Sociology, Film, HR, History, Law, etc. Following the viewing, there will be an informational panel discussion on topics relating to social justice and topics of diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as Title IX resources. If you are passionate and interested in these topics and ideas, join us for the screening and discussion! Please note that the film does contain verbal accounts of sexual abuse that may be disturbing for to some viewers.
