DESCRIPTION:Kristin Denise Rowe "Kris" will discuss parts of her forthcomin
 g book project tentatively titled: "It's the Feelings I Wear": Black Women
 \, Natural Hair\, and New Media Re/Constructions of Beauty (University of 
 North Carolina Press). Using an “embodied Black feminist framework\,” 
 her book provides an exploration of contemporary representations of Black 
 women’s natural hair in television\, film\, art\, non-fiction prose\, an
 d music. She investigates various sites of inquiry: natural hair product a
 dvertisements and internet representations\, as well as the ways Black wom
 en’s hair texture is evoked in recent song lyrics\, filmic scenes\, and 
 non-fiction prose by Black women. She argues each of these sites of inquir
 y—“hair moments”—offers a complex articulation of the ways Black w
 omen experience\, share\, (re)negotiate\, and (re)articulate the fraught t
 errain that is hegemonic standards of beauty and raced/gendered body polit
 ics. Ultimately\, her project uses hair as a vehicle for recovering the ag
 ency and interiority within Black women’s uses of their bodies.
