About this Event
It is our pleasure to share that we are hosting an information session for the Summer Study Abroad program in Senegal, on the following days/times in Welles 111:
- Tuesday October 19, 6:15-7:15pm
- Tuesday November 16, 6:15-7:15pm
We encourage you to attend any of the two information sessions if you are interested in this transformational summer program or have questions to help you decide. Also feel free to share this information with others you feel may be interested in the program.
Our program, one of the most affordable at Geneseo, is a 4-credit four-week faculty-led homestay experience, from May 28 to June 27, 2022, in the port city of Dakar in Senegal. You may take the course in English (ENGL 308) or in French (FREN 312). Our program provides three (3) meals a day and a personal cellphone free of charge to each participant while in Senegal. You will also enjoy three weekend excursions with overnight stays at places such as the town of Toubacouta with its beautiful islands (shell island, birds island, mangroves, and Sipo island), the town of Toubab-Dialaw (with its beautiful beach and workshops in drumming, batik painting, and Senegalese dance), the pink Lake, the famous Gorée Island (UNESCO World Heritage site), and the grand safari at the Bandia Wildlife Reserve. Local visits on weekday’s afternoons and some evenings take the group to museums, artisanal exhibits, popular markets, and more beaches.
During this study abroad, you are given the opportunity to complete a first-hand research project as part of your morning class, in the field of your own interest: language, education, business, medical/health, psychology, bilingualism, history, literature, music, fashion, arts, politics, diplomacy, religion, climate change, etc… Also, as optional opportunity (not mandatory), if you choose to present your research from Senegal here in the United States in the academic year following the summer program, the program directors provide that opportunity under their mentorship; many past participants presented at NCUR, the biggest national conference on undergraduate research in the US (it is held every year on a rotational campus). Student Research Funds are available from Geneseo to pay for your trip to present at NCUR. Simply let the program directors know if this is something you would like to pursue [and happily add to your CV].
