Luvon Sheppard:New Collages:Go Back and Fetch It

In Luvon Sheppard’s new work he continues to use the visual elements that have always played a significant role in his arduous pursuit to understand and experience visual relationships as applied to his studio method, processes, and materials. It involves both juxtapositions and reflections that relate to ideas, shapes, color, places, characters, and its narrative actions and poetics. This work process aides in the development of comparisons and contrasts to provoke an unexpected mix of historic and contemporary elements.

"The collage for me is a natural bridge for integration of history, culture, time chance and is a natural synthesis for my work in watercolor. The transparency of watercolor mixed with the mirrored paper, printed negatives and positives, and photo mixed media allows me the freedom of juxtaposition, mirroring and expression, and the freedom to work with form in a traditional manner or blend watercolor and found material. Sheppard's major concern and studio practice involve the study of artists such as Joseph Turner, John Singer Sargent, and Winslow Homer, plus bi-weekly Plein-air painting. Special consideration is painting reflective elements, objects, and the water's reflection on lake and ponds.

Luvon Sheppard is a professor of art at Rochester Institute of Technology and formerly taught watercolor painting in SUNY Geneseo's art department. He has mentored hundreds of students and exhibits his paintings throughout New York. He and his partner Frances own the Joy Gallery in Rochester. We are pleased to present his latest work to the Geneseo community.
