Since 1992, Geneseo's original Humanities Abroad course has taken place at Oxford University in Oxford, England. The course counts for either the Humanities core requirement through 2022 or for elective credit fulfilling the outside-of-major / 200-level requirements for graduation. Classes begin online, 5 July 2022 and continue in Oxford, 12 July-3 August 2022.

HUMN 220 looks critically at writings that have profoundly our society’s behavior and thought. Reading and discussing works from Ancient Greece to Elizabethan England, from Plato to Shakespeare, we will strive together to explore probing and provocative questions about living a just life in a world that can be so cruel. Studying great thinkers from the past can lead us to both humility and wisdom.  In Oxford, this course also shows how social/political ideas have shaped (and been shaped by) Britain in particular.

Students live and study at Lincoln College. Founded in 1427, Lincoln is the eighth oldest of Oxford University's 38 colleges and includes a splendid medieval dining hall. Famous Lincolnites include John Wesley, founder of Methodism; Dr Seuss, the children's author; and Rachel Maddow, MSNBC presenter. (See more about Lincoln at www.lincoln.ox.ac.uk) We will explore Oxford together (from medieval buildings to Harry Potter film sites) and also make daytrips to London and Stratford-upon-Avon; a long weekend is also available for personal travel in the UK or nearby Europe.
