TLC Fall Reading Group: Teaching Toward Slow Hope
About this Event
Join colleagues for a discussion centered around Teaching Toward Slow Hope (2026), by Douglas Haynes. Our book group this fall will meet virtually, in order to expand access. There will be 2 sessions:
- Monday, 10/19 @ 4pm (with Teams Link): conversation focused on Introduction - Chapter 3
- Monday, 11/16 @ 4pm (with Teams Link): conversation focused on Chapter 4 - Conclusion
This invitation is open to all. You do not need to have read the relevant portion of the book in order to join us in either meeting. We invite everyone to consider deliberately slow, place-based learning opportunities together.
About the book:
"Teaching Toward Slow Hope reveals what happens when higher education dares to become something more than transactional. Rather than positioning education as a financial investment, this book reimagines college as a space where students cultivate the skills and relationships needed for 'collaborative survival' in an increasingly unpredictable world. Against a backdrop of mental health crises, ecological instability, and structural inequality, Douglas Haynes traces how students and educators across the Upper Midwest are remaking college into a place for connection, meaning, and collective resilience." -John Hopkins University Press
A limited number of copies of this book are available for participants through the TLC. Please email Alexis (clifton@geneseo.edu) to request a copy.
